Project AWARE® Specialist (Newly Revised) Uniting scuba divers and water enthusiasts to make a difference. By earning this certification, you’ll be aware of the most pressing problems facing aquatic environments and how to protect them. Project AWARE’s philosophy is to mobilize a global force of scuba divers and water enthusiasts who care about protecting the world’s water resources and choose to make a difference – one dive at a time. By earning the Project AWARE Specialist certification, you’ll be aware of the most pressing problems facing vulnerable aquatic environments and know what everyday actions you can take to help protect them. Anyone who has an interest in the aquatic world should take this course. There are no prerequisites, age restrictions or water sessions required for this non-diving specialty. Through virtual classroom discussions, you learn:
– How Project AWARE unites scuba divers and water enthusiasts to make a difference.
– About environmental issues in the ocean commons and coastal zones.
– About fisheries challenges and sustainability problems. –
– What’s happening to coral reefs and reef inhabitants.
– Your role in protecting aquatic environments.
At the end of this course you receiver an electronic PDF certificate to recognize your attendance. If you are a qualified PADI diver then this course can count to your Master Scuba Diving Rating. In order for this to count you should upgrade your certificate to a PADI PIC Certification Card (This will be a E-Card you will need the PADI app to display this). We can discuss how to do this at the time of the course. (Cost is an additional £75).
What’s included as standard ?
– Electronic PDF Certificate of attendance.
– 24 months Access to our website which shares valuable resources on project aware. And all the materials you need for the course.
At additional cost, depending on the ticket you choose, we will also include
Course Hand out and Work Book, and a printed on card certificate of attendance – These are posed out second class to UK addresses, and posted out before the course. Please allow 7 days for delivery and chance for you to read through.
If you are thinking of doing the Coral Reef conservation course as well, take a look at our combined event, which runs on at weekends and will be delivered in English only. Its the participants responsibility to ensure that you have good internet access, and capable of running Skype preferably from a pc. Webcams are optional but audio is a requirement. An email with a link will be sent to you when your place is confirmed. Please ensure your email address given is correct. You don’t have to have skype installed you can join by the web client.
International Attendance. We are happy to extend this course outside of the UK. We regret for the moment Workbooks and certificates can not be posted out to places outside of the UK mainland. You will still receive an email PDF certificate and all required materials can be viewed under the resources on our website.

Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
I am pleased to inform you that the tenth session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES 10) will be held from 28 August to 2 September 2023. The session will be hosted by the United States of America in Bonn, Germany.
At present, the session is planned as a physical meeting. If closer to the meeting it becomes apparent that owing to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, a physical meeting cannot be held, the Bureau will further decide on the modalities of the session.
IPBES 10 will be preceded by regional consultations and a Stakeholder Day on 27 August 2023. Further information on these events will follow in due course.
At IPBES 10, the Plenary will consider, among other items, the thematic assessment of invasive alien species, as well as requests, inputs and suggestions for additional elements of the rolling work programme of the Platform up to 2030. Regular elections for the membership of the Bureau, including the IPBES Chair, will also be held at that session.
Considering the experience acquired in the preparation for IPBES 8 and IPBES 9, a preparatory process will be organized to allow for refinement of documentation and informal consultations prior to IPBES 10.
Further information on the preparatory process as well as information on the registration process and meeting documentation will be shared in due course.
I thank you for your continued support to IPBES.

The conference will feature hundreds of world-class speakers and delegates from around the globe on the science, technology, business, and social aspects of aquaculture. St. John’s is located on the most eastern edge of North America, is Canada’s oldest European settlement, and the region is home to some of the most ecologically interesting areas in the World. Nearby UNESCO heritage sites, wildlife and nature conservancies make for exciting daily excursions. Historic and archival locations (one of the 4 corners of the Earth, Viking Settlements, etc.) are within 2 day excursions. This city, famous for its hospitality, music, and culinary experiences is a quick trip across the Atlantic from Europe, and easily accessible from all other parts of North America, and the globe, by air. St. John’s is also home to internationally recognized centres in aquaculture and fisheries science, with Memorial University’s Fisheries and Marine Institute and Faculty of Science leading the way.
Cold Harvest 2023 is the place to learn about the latest in aquaculture, see the newest technology in the trade show, and have a great time in the many fantastic restaurants and entertainment sites that St. John’s and Newfoundland and Labrador have to offer.

The 5th annual ESG and Climate Risk Week looks beyond ESG and climate risks to provide practical scenarios on how companies are strengthening their climate disclosure. With near-term target-setting and action-planning, companies will align with global commitments to a just and inclusive low-carbon transition. It is the only risk event that convenes the whole market in one place: from institutional investors to financial services, as well as companies and solution providers. There is a need for collaboration among these groups so that investors and financial stakeholders can review a company’s ESG and climate disclosures and understand the risks and impacts.
The event will take place in a hybrid format on September 12th-14th 2023, in-person and virtually. We will be hosting an in-person day at Hilton Bankside, London, UK.

Details
During the United Nations General Assembly high-level week in September 2023, Heads of State and Government will gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2022 called for the Summit to “mark the beginning of a new phase of accelerated progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.”
The SDG Summit marks the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It will bring together political and thought leaders from governments, international organizations, private sector, civil society, women and youth and other stakeholders in a series of high-level meetings. They will carry out a comprehensive review of the state of the SDGs, respond to the impact of multiple and interlocking crises facing the world, and provide high-level political guidance on transformative and accelerated actions leading up to the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs. The SDG Summit will be chaired by the President of the General Assembly. The outcome of the Summit will be a negotiated political declaration.
The Summit will focus on people. It will culminate 10 months of active preparations involving governments, the UN system and other international and regional organizations, the private sector, NGOs, youth, cities, and multiple other actors and people. It will benefit from the proposals of an independent group of scientists through the Global Sustainable Development Report, the Secretary-General’s SDG progress report and analysis from the UN system, think tanks and others.
This will be the second SDG Summit, since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in September 2015.

Details
Aquaculture is the world’s most diverse farming practice in terms of number of species, farming methods, intensity level and environ-ments used. Significant efforts have been made to promote species diversity since global aquaculture production is dominated by a few dozen species. The needs for responsible use of resources, improved efficiency and in-creased resilience against future challenges such as diseases and climate change require further diversification in aquaculture beyond species level.
However, diversification in aquaculture should be well balanced taking into account area specificities, available natural resources, social realities and needs of circular economy. Diversification should be appropriately main-tained for local conditions, market access and resilience. Balance between small- and large-scale aquaculture en-terprises and activities of various water users for example are salient issues in future aquaculture development.
Taking place in the iconic Austrian capital, Vienna, AE2023 will be a perfect meeting place for this focus on diversification, and while Austria has a low aquaculture produc-tion, it has plans for development of existing and new production methods and species and it is at the heart of central Europe, adjacent to Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Italy and other European countries focussing on aquaculture development.
Diversification is of course also especially relevant to the marine sector and the AE2023 parallel sessions will cover the full scope of European aquaculture scientific disci-plines and species and will comprise submitted oral and poster presentations. AE2023 will also feature an inter-national trade exhibition, industry forum, student sessions and activities, satellite workshops and updates on EU research.

From severe storms to ocean warming to sea level rise, climate change poses a clear and present threat to treasured places, critical biodiversity, and cultural resources across the national marine sanctuary system. Sanctuaries need to monitor climate change’s impact within their sites and on natural resources, so they can identify and respond to these impacts. Everyone who visits and uses sanctuaries can play an invaluable role in ensuring their continued prosperity by helping to monitor for climate change impacts. Join us to learn more about the importance of climate change monitoring in sanctuaries, and how all kinds of visitors – from divers, to teachers, to fishers – are helping to monitor and educate about climate change impacts in Stellwagen Bank and Florida Keys national marine sanctuaries. Solving the climate crisis is going to take all of us working together, how can you support climate monitoring at your local sanctuary?

In December 2022, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced that he will convene a Climate Ambition Summit in September 2023. He urged leaders from governments, business, cities and regions, civil society, and finance to come with new, tangible, and credible climate action to accelerate the pace of change.
Briefing Member States on 9 June, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed identified the Summit as an opportunity for “First Movers and Doers” to “tell us how they are responding to the Secretary-General’s call to ‘accelerate’ climate action”. She said the Summit will be organized around “three distinct but interrelated tracks”:
- Ambition, aimed at governments, especially major emitters;
- Credibility, aimed at leaders of businesses, cities, regions, and financial institutions; and
- Implementation, aimed at showcasing existing and emerging partnerships that either accelerate decarbonization in high-emitting sectors such as energy or shipping or deliver progress on climate justice in areas such as early warning systems and adaptation financing.
The Summit will convene alongside the second SDG Summit, which aims to accelerate action at the mid-way point of the SDGs.

With the increased electrification of our energy systems including increased use of EVs, heat pumps, etc; increasing total electrical generation is a must. Utility scale solar, typically coupled with storage, is going to be another tool that utilities will use to diversify their generation mix. This webinar will discuss some of the considerations that need to be taken when developing a utility scale development from 1-10MW. These include site selection and land agreements, utility interconnection considerations, managing distribution/transmission/load constraints with storage and discussion of the process we use to make decisions around those considerations.

In her latest film, celebrated Abenaki director Alanis Obomsawin tells the story of Jordan River Anderson, and how as a result of his short life, thousands of First Nations and Inuit children today receive the same standard of social, health, and education services as the rest of the Canadian population.
Because of Jordan’s Indian status, a dispute arose between the governments of Canada and Manitoba over who was responsible for his care, and Jordan did not receive the appropriate home-based assistance that would have allowed him to end his life in his own community.
Jordan’s Principle was passed into law by the House of Commons, and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal issued a ruling guaranteeing the same standard of service, yet many First Nations and Inuit children were still denied access. It took sustained commitment and the issuance of several mandatory orders for justice to be done.
