Training at IOI-Canada

Training is a key activity of the IOI global network. The Institute’s flagship interdisciplinary training programme has been conducted at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia each summer since being initiated by Elisabeth Mann Borgese in 1981. Covid-19 led to the postponement of the 2020 course and the introduction of online training instead, but we look forward to rescheduling it when circumstances permit.

Information on 2023 training will be posted in the New Year once funding has been confirmed.

INDIGENOUS OCEAN GOVERNANCE WORKSHOP
5th – 9th December 2022

Planned with and for Indigenous Peoples, this free interdisciplinary workshop will take place in Halifax as an in-person event. It will combine presentations, discussions and field trips, and will feature Indigenous speakers among the specialists sharing their knowledge and expertise. Participants will explore key aspects of Ocean and Coastal Governance with particular attention to Indigenous needs, perspectives and knowledge systems. A final certificate will be available upon completion of the workshop.

Applications are invited from Indigenous Peoples from Mi’kma’ki, Wolastoqiyik and Peskotomuhkatik (Maritime Provinces) and the group size will be capped at 15 participants. The workshop is designed primarily for those engaged in the ocean/coastal/environmental field but applicants with other backgrounds could also be considered, space permitting. Accommodation, meals and transportation will be covered, with co-funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ocean and Science Research Foundation.
