Farmed seafood is an important component of a sustainable seafood portfolio: building off of our success in wild-capture fisheries, developing a domestic aquaculture industry is important for the economic and environmental resiliency of our coastal communities, and national food security. NOAA recognizes that marine aquaculture is vital for supporting our nation’s seafood production, year-round jobs, rebuilding protected species and habitats, and enhancing coastal resilience. The agency’s Aquaculture Program supports cutting-edge science and research as well as federal policy making and outreach to grow sustainable aquaculture and expand its social, economic, and environmental benefits.
