Through equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility best practices, you can set your ocean organization apart, while attracting and retaining a resilient and innovative workforce.

How can your ocean organization recruit and retain a resilient and innovative workforce?

  1. Understanding the value EDIA brings to your ocean organization
  2. Learning how to attract diverse talent
  3. Retaining talent through inclusive workplace best practices
  4. Accessing resources to help you implement EDIA best practices for workforce development

So, what value does EDIA bring to your organization?

Often, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) are promoted as ethically or morally beneficial things for your organization to incorporate, with little acknowledgement given to the direct value that diversity brings to the organization itself.

Diverse and inclusive organizations often perform better than ones without a focus on EDIA due to the increased diversity of perspectives and many ways of thinking across the team. Diverse perspectives and thinking can help organizations become more resilient to economic change, growth, and expansion through innovation and increased staff retention.

Some of the key benefits of EDIA in the workplace include:

  • Increased productivity
  • Improved cultural awareness
  • Increased global market opportunities
  • More effective, high-quality work and deeper engagement
  •  Generate and foster fresh insights, new ideas and creative solutions

If you need numbers to help sell the value of EDI&A for your organization, an analysis performed by McKinsey & Company in 2019 found that companies with higher ethnic and gender diversity in their executive teams tended to be more profitable. Feelings of belonging can increase productivity by $52,000,000 for a company with 10,000 employees, and feelings of inclusion combined with organizational commitment to diversity increase an organization’s ability to respond to customer needs by 31%2

Not only is EDIA morally positive, but it also makes sense in building strong, resilient, and innovative workplaces. Diverse organizations tend to be more successful at recruiting and retaining talent, more likely to outperform, and more profitable. Without a focus on EDIA, attracting and retaining the best talent for your organization becomes trickier.

How to attract diverse talent

Attracting diverse talent can feel like a daunting challenge when you aren’t sure where to start.

One of the best ways to attract diverse talent is by strengthening your organization’s commitment to inclusive practices.

Here are some easy steps you can take to showcase and action your commitment to EDIA through talent attraction and hiring practices:

  1. Start by talking about EDIA openly with your workforce, especially in leadership, to help familiarize with inclusive practices and understand where to focus your commitments for EDIA
  2. Create public EDIA statements to include on your website to showcase your organization’s dedication to creating an inclusive workplace
  3. Ensure job postings are inclusive (use this job posting checklist as a resource)

Retain talent through inclusive workplace best practices

Becoming an inclusive employer can help you to build your organization's resilience, innovation, productivity and workforce satisfaction. Employer’s that meets their employee's personal and professional needs often see increases in retention and innovative perspectives in their workforce.

Inclusive employment and retention practices can help ensure that your organization not only performs better, it advances the professional needs of your staff by providing equitable access to opportunities for your workforce.

What do inclusive workplaces look like?

  • An inclusive workplace has visible and/or measurable diversity among its workforce, and continues to welcome diverse participants in the workplace
  • Inclusive workplaces consider the perspectives and voices of all of their employees in their policies, practices, procedures and strategic activities, making sure all voices are heard and valued
  • Inclusive workplaces encourage collaboration and teamwork as it aims to encourage peer support and asking for support, increase inclusivity for employees and strengthen the team through connectivity
  • Inclusive workplaces have policies, procedures, and actionable commitments to EDIA in the workplace, including anti-harassment policies, accountability for discriminatory practices, DEI&A policies, training and development for all employees, and strategic steps to take action to foster inclusion in the workforce and their community.
